I AM getting older
So all these people are noting the passage of a psychotic dictator who starved his own people to indulge his megalomaniacal and pointless military ambitions… …and wishing that he “rest in peace?” That’s irony, right? It seems awfully subtle if it is. Maybe my irony detector’s broken.

NYIOP - New York International Opera Auditions →
I haven’t sung professionally for quite a while now, but I’m still on the NYIOP mailing list, giving me a constant reminder of some of the worst things about a career in the performing arts.  Can you imagine any other industry charging its applicants for an interview?  Yet, the NYIOP proudly trumpets the discount it’s offering this year. It will cost you “only” $300...

Emptyage: Generation X Doesn't Want to Hear It →
“The first generation to do worse than its parents? Please. Been there. Generation X was told that so many times that it can’t even read those words without hearing Winona Ryder’s voice in its heads. Or maybe it’s Ethan Hawke’s. Possibly Bridget Fonda’s. Generation X is getting older, and can’t remember those movies so well anymore. In retrospect, maybe they weren’t very good to begin with....

Maybe there are more Monkeybone fans than I...
Somehow, the Fox station here doesn’t think Cincinnatians would have any interest in watching a football team from 260 miles away that is enjoying its first 5-0 season since the mid-50s. They’re betting we’d all rather watch a 10-year-old Brendan Fraser movie.

Public Transit
In Chicago for work, and riding the bus. The two ladies sitting next to me have never met, but one of them was reading the Film Festival schedule. So now they’ve been talking for 15 minutes about the films they’ve seen, the plot twists and character development, and the emotions they invoked. I really hate living in the suburbs.

8 Reasons Young Americans Don't Fight Back: How... →
I hope the Occupy Wall Street phenomenon is an indication that youth resistance could be reborn, but this is an amazing analysis of what’s held it down. Unemployment over 14% for workers under 24 could re-ignite it after all.
